Taxes & Your Gift
Your Tax Deduction — What to Expect
A donated vehicle can lower your taxable income. Here is how the paperwork and the deduction work.
IRS Form 1098-C
Form 1098-C is the written acknowledgment a 501(c)(3) charity gives you for a donated vehicle, and it is the document your tax preparer needs to claim the deduction. Mercy House mails it within 30 days of your vehicle being sold.
The "5A" deduction rule
If your vehicle sells for more than $500, you deduct the actual sale price, not the sticker or mileage estimate. If it sells for $500 or less, you may deduct the fair market value up to $500.
Running or not, it still counts
Vehicles donated running or not still qualify. A car that will not start, has a blown engine or transmission trouble, or has body damage can be donated, and the same acknowledgment rules apply.
Mississippi state taxes
Mississippi follows its own rules for charitable deductions, and those rules can differ from the federal ones. Consult your tax advisor about how a vehicle donation affects your state return.
We'll mail your IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days of your vehicle being sold — no paperwork headaches for you.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about pickup, titles, taxes, and what happens to your vehicle.
What vehicles do you accept?+
We accept cars, trucks, SUVs, vans, motorcycles, RVs and boats, plus houses and land for the right gift. Vehicles are welcome running or not, including ones that have been sitting for a while. If you are not sure whether yours qualifies, call and we will tell you.
Do you really pick it up for free?+
Yes. Towing is free anywhere in Mississippi, including Rankin, Hinds, Simpson and Madison counties, and there is no charge even when the vehicle does not run. You pay nothing at pickup and nothing after. We schedule the tow for a time that works for you.
What if I lost my title?+
You can apply for a replacement title through the Mississippi Department of Revenue using Form 78-002. Our team walks you through the form and what to include. Call us and we will help you get the paperwork started before pickup.
How long does the process take?+
Most pickups are scheduled within 3 to 5 business days of your call or online form. Once the vehicle is picked up, we handle the title work and the sale. We keep you posted by email and text along the way.
What tax deduction will I receive?+
Mercy House mails your IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days of the vehicle being sold. If it sells for more than $500, you deduct the actual sale price; if it sells for $500 or less, you may deduct fair market value up to $500. The section above explains both rules, and your tax advisor can apply them to your return.
What condition does my car need to be in?+
Any condition is fine: running, not running, damaged, high mileage or missing parts. A non-running vehicle is picked up on a flatbed at no cost to you. If it can be reconditioned, our team repairs it for resale; if not, it goes to salvage so the value still supports the ministry.
How do I know the proceeds stay in Mississippi?+
Mercy House Adult & Teen Challenge is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 45-4670832) based in Mississippi, and donated vehicles fund its programs here rather than a national middleman. We hold the Candid Platinum Seal of Transparency, so you can review our finances and mission on GuideStar. Your gift does not leave the state.
Can I donate if the car is in someone else's name?+
The person listed as the legal owner has to sign the title over before we can accept the vehicle. If the owner has passed away, or the title is in a spouse's or parent's name, call us first. We will explain which documents are needed so the donation goes smoothly.
What happens to my car after donation?+
After pickup your vehicle is sold at auction or sent to salvage, depending on its condition. All proceeds fund Mercy House Adult & Teen Challenge recovery programs, workforce training and the ministry's daily work. You receive your IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days of the sale.
Can I donate from outside Mississippi?+
Yes, as long as the vehicle is in Mississippi or can be towed here. If you live out of state but the car is with family in Mississippi, we can usually still pick it up. Call us to confirm before you fill out the form.
